This was the first time a troupe from Eastern Canada toured, Scotland/England, which was a huge undertaking at that time. Preparations began in 1978 and it was all worth the challenge. The dancers participated in the Commonwealth Championships in Edinburgh as well as the World Highland Dance Championships in Dunoon, Scotland. Highlights included the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, Edinburgh Castle, Sir Walter Scott Monument, Firth of Forth, Holyrood, School of the Deaf and walking and shopping along the Royal Mile. We also enjoyed a boat tour of Loch Lomond & the Trossacks and also enjoyed a tour of Glasgow, which included Glasgow Cathedral, Georges Square and many industrial sites.
The dancers were very fortunate to be able to take part in a dance workshop conducted by the late, but great Elspeth Strathern of Scotland.
The final days of the tour were spent in London where the dancers enjoyed seeing the changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, St. Pauls Cathedral, Tower of London, River Thames, Piccadilly Circus, House of Parliament, Big Ben,the Statue of Boadicea, Beefeaters, National Gallery, Parliament Buildings, and Trafalgar Square, and a trip to Macdonalds Restaurant, which had just recently opened in London!! |
